L is for Lady-like

I grew up with a mom who often told me, “That’s not lady-like.” I understood that this was a chastisement, but it didn’t stop me from playing in mud puddles or scraping my knees. It did imbue me with a certain amount of grace to my step and manners, reflexive upright posture and consideration of others. I was never a pink girl, though you could have talked me into the above tu-tu since it was dramatic as long as I could also wear the stripes (which I still adore) and the Converses (of which I’ve had many pairs.)

My mom tried to get me to stop playing with boy’s toys, but I just played with my brother’s if she didn’t buy them. My favorite gift as a child was when the parents finally gave in one Christmas and bought me a large set of little trucks. My other favorite thing was climbing trees. I don’t think anyone could have stopped me from that, and I still steal away up into one if I get the chance.

I’m still not a shopper and I hate talking on the phone. I like dressing up but don’t take it too seriously. I never went boy crazy but I sure love my man. I don’t seem to groove on many of the things that other girls do, but I would consider myself a lady never-the-less. Whatever lady-like might be.
