X = Vote, X = Nothing

I’m going to get serious for a moment…Are you still here? Good, because that’s what this is about. Distraction from the real issues.

Oddly enough, it’s the things that seem the most real that may be the biggest distraction of all. We’re presented with ideas, issues, controversies. We’re asked to ‘LIKE’ things such as efforts to conquer disease or the momentary triumph of someone challenged by extreme hardship.

DSCN5997We put in our vote online. We read the moving story. We hear the political issue debated and weigh in on ‘our side’. And we feel like we’ve done something. But we’ve actually accomplished Nothing.

Do more than care. Do more than vote. Do Something. Make a Real difference.

  2. I know you’re saying do more than vote, but this reminded me of my friend whose really passionate about Sanders and she posts stuff about him all the time and talks about how he needs to win and then the primaries came up and she was not even planning to vote… How can you tell other people to support something you aren’t even supporting? What good is a Facebook meme being shared about your belief if you can’t even back it up? Anyway, that’s what your post made me think of.

    • Yes, it brought to mind for you exactly what I was meaning. I’m not saying anything against voting in an actually election. That is doing Something. It’s taking action. But voting online by getting emotional about a cause is not action. I’ve seen lots of people doing that too, and that’s what sparked my post. And also, creating things or bringing up actual experiences in your writing is doing Something. But reacting to words or stories rarely creates change – unless you connect to someone who is sparked into action by your reaction.

  3. Great post Sheri. You are quite correct. We are becoming more distanced from the real world and first-hand experiences of anything and personal involvement in causes are becoming rarer.
