    Very nice images! I love that lichen, too. It’s called Usnea longissima and finding it is a sign of good air quality – it won’t grow in bad air and has disappeared in many places, but likes old growth-type environments. That says good things about your river, right?

      Yes, although this photo was taken out in the Middle Fork area, so slightly closer to full wilderness. I don’t know that we get this exact one in my neighborhood. We get one that’s similar but usually much smaller bits of it, not full beards like this.
      Thanks for letting me know the name of it. I thought it was a lichen rather than a moss, but wasn’t certain. This one was very near the old growth stump I posted an image of recently. There are still some huge old growth trees out in that area if you know where to find them, but they take some fairly lengthy hikes by compass. The maps aren’t readily available to help preserve the final stands of them. One of these days I’d like to go look for them.

        I’m a little late reading your reply. 😉 You should do that! I miss certain areas that I used to visit outside of Seattle. I was thinking about Gold Pond the other day – have you been there? Right off 90, so you hear traffic, but it’s still a wonderful place and the walk around the pond can be inspiring. I think I only went up to the Middle Fork area once or twice – there are photos from April 2013.
        With GPS on the phone, maybe you can track those trees down. It’s such a beautiful, wild place…

          Middle fork is paved now so more crowded but also more new trails etc. There’s a local author that wrote a book on the Big Trees that are left, and he’ll disclose locations if you contact him directly. He didn’t publish maps or give in to requests to post locations online because he wants to keep them as protected as possible. I have his contact info, so can get info any time. I’m a bit too busy to go out there currently. Also, phone connection doesn’t work out there, so must use compass I think. Perhaps actual GPS device would still work? It’s on my Someday list at this point. Yes I know Gold Pond. Snow-shoed there once. I like Denny Creek area too.
